Well … these pictures are coming in VERY late, but it is better to have them for the prosperity of mankind. Yes, it snowed in Los Angeles back on February 26, 2011 and L.A. the Blog came across some pics. It has been said that it hadn’t snowed in Burbank since 1949, but we haven’t independently verified that fact (and probably won’t). Well, if it snows again in the next few year we can safely assume global warming is on its way …

L.A. the Blog: What’s up with graffiti in Hollywood?
Everyone knows you can get a good look at some of L.A.’s graffiti artist by cruising Melrose between and around Fairfax and La Brea Ave., but if you’re interested in digging a bit deeper, just off the beaten path in Hollywood some real treasures exist.
For instance not less than a half mile from the well-known shopping area on North Gower Street tucked behind Paramount Studios sits a plethora of industrial spaces transformed from the dull white or gray into something out of the 80’s.
It looks like most of the wall space along Gower in the area has been taken for all you fledgling street bombers out there, at least all the wall space that hasn’t been painted over or buffed. Of course you can always buff and paint over, but then you risk the wrath of angering some of the most notorious street graffiti crews in Los Angeles: AWR, MSK, and who knows who else …
Curious L.A. the Blog sent an e-mail to Paramount to find out if any of the work was commissioned by the studio or of any of it found its way into the movies. We will keep you updated as we plague the studio with phone calls. Anyway check out the picks below (you win a prize if you spot Filter Magazines office in the pics):
The next hidden street gallery, though only consisting of two real walls that have been exploited is much closer to the Melrose shopping district, on the corner of Melrose and Highland Ave.
Most notably you can find Buff Monster’s 10-year anniversary piece. You know Buff Monster, the cute bubbly guy:
Last in this piece (ha, get it piece!) is another new location that is still under work and put up in 2010. It is at the corner of Edgewood and La Brea Ave rivaling the Paramount spot in breadth and variety.
The spot is further than the other two location, but definitely worth the drive. If you go be sure to travel a little further down on La Brea and you can catch MBW’s send off to the Academy Awards (and most likely Exit Through the Gift Shop), Storm Troopers and all. Before it was a tribute to Charlie Chaplin.
L.A. the Blog is trying to figure out if MBW licensed the storm troopers from Lucas Films LTD. We will keep you updated.
Please look at a complete set of pictures in the gallery below. While there are numerous spots in Hollywood to look at great graffiti, we will try to bring them all as we come across them. Best!
L.A. the Blog: WTF is Boxed Water?
Straight from Grand Rapids, MI comes the newest in useless products, or gimmicky marketing ideas, or possible just plain stupidity. Yes, it is Boxed Water Is Better. WTF is Boxed Water you ask?
Supposedly it is better. The box says it is purified water and I am sure that it doesn’t taste better than spring water, at least not as good as Fiji water, but maybe it does. It isn’t in a plastic container and that for sure is better. It even claims that 76 percent of the box comes from trees! Genius! Though we seem to be killing trees all over the planet faster than we can replace them … maybe not so good.
But in turn if you go to the Boxed Water Is Better website you learn all kinds of neat stuff. Like they donate 10 percent of their profits to reforestation foundations, and 10 percent to world water relief foundations. Do they list which ones on the website? No, but who cares they are giving. They have been selling the product since 2009, and almost a year later it surfaces in Los Angeles.
The product is recyclable … but only if your city has stupid box carton recycling plants. Sorry New York City you only recycle profitable items, and boxed cartons don’t count at all. The website claims carton recycling is growing. Hurray! Except if you follow the links to find out if your community recycles the link doesn’t work, booooo. Well, don’t worry Los Angeles for the record we don’t recycle boxed cartons, follow this link to find out what L.A. recycles.
So maybe boxed water isn’t better. One person when asked thought the best container for water equals glass. Glass is recyclable. It comes from renewable resources. You don’t have to kill poor trees and that makes the vegans happy … dope!
Well in defense of boxed water, it is easier and cheaper to ship cartons than glass. That means bottled water might cut down on costly fuel waste. So mark one up for boxed water.
Most likely Grand Rapids, MI manufactures box cartons and they have way too many on hand, so they boxed up purified tap water to sell with the cartons. That way they got rid of their stupid boxes. They then created this funky marketing ploy. Okay maybe too much conspiracy.
And then straight from Boxed Water’s website it says, “Part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious.” So in reality it is another f’n hipster art project … sad.
Update: So L.A. the Blog realized it never got the price for this phenomenal marketing attack. $2.50 for a box of water, so you can not save the environment with this non-recyclable product while at the same time lose all your money … do yourself a favor, buy glass bottles.
Update 06/24/2014: We recently updated the link that leads you to what the City of Los Angeles recycles, and we are happy to announce that Los Angeles now does recycle cartons!!!! It is also true that New York City recycles cartons now too!!! Progress evident in my lifetime, love it. So now maybe Boxed Water is a little better 😉
